Three women who served in executive positions in the White House were featured in the speaking series, "Women of the White House," this fall at Purdue University. The series provided the audience, especially students, an insider's perspective on policy, process and communication surrounding our country's highest office. All of the scheduled speakers had ties to the state of Indiana and Purdue University.

The first forum featured an interview conducted by Brian Lamb, CEO and founder of C-SPAN of former U.S Ambassador and Clinton Presidential speechwriter Carolyn Curiel, now a clinical professor in the communications department at Purdue University. Both Lamb and Curiel are Purdue Alumni. (See video excerpt right- provided by Purdue Exponent)

The second forum featured an interview conducted by Ambassador Curiel of former White House liaison and current U.S Ambassador of the Organization of American States, Carmen Lomellin. While working for the Clinton administration, Curiel and Lomellin  discovered they were distant cousins. (See video excerpt right- provided by Purdue Exponent)

The third and final forum featured an lecture by Navy Admiral Connie Mariano, the White House Physician to three presidents and author of the book "White House Doctor." (See photo to the right- provided by Purdue Exponent)

In all, over 500 students, faculty and community members attended the forums and ancillary activities.  Support for the series was provided by Project IMPACT, the College of Liberal Arts, the Department of Communication, the Susan Bulkeley Butler Center for Leadership Excellence, the Purdue Alumni Center, and Purdue Women Lead.  Scott Schroeder and his team of students were responsible for the audio-visual set up.

"Leadership in Crises: Lessons from Katrina and Haiti"

Admiral Thad Allen

The commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard, who directed the federal response to Hurricane Katrina and played a major role in other disaster recovery missions, spoke in March 2010 at Purdue University regarding his experiences. The U.S. Coast Guard is the largest component of the Department of Homeland Security and the only branch of the armed forces that also has law enforcement responsibilities. Allen is the Coast Guard's only four-star admiral, and he retired in May 2010 after 38 years of service.

"There are few people in public service to our nation who have achieved what Adm. Allen has," said Ambassador Carolyn Curiel, who invited Allen to campus. The two worked together when she was U.S. ambassador to Belize.

"Thad Allen is the kind of leader who, through words, action and example, inspires and moves people. The Coast Guard mission is saving lives, often in dire circumstances - something Thad and his team achieved in a major way through his leadership after Hurricane Katrina."

Allen also has been instrumental in planning ways to improve U.S. port security since 9/11.  The event was held in Purdue Memorial Union and was sponsored  by Purdue's Global Policy Research Institute and Project IMPACT: The Intersection of Media, Policy and Communication Technology.  Curiel led the planning process for the Global Policy Research Institute and now leads Project IMPACT.
